Semiconductor shortage continues in February, 23% drop in vehicle sales Zee Business

SIAM Auto Sale Data: Industry body SIAM (SIAM) said that there has been a 23 percent decline in automobile dispatches from factories to dealerships across the country in February. A number of supply-side challenges, including semiconductor shortages and increase in vehicle prices due to the implementation of new regulations, impacted the demand.

Passenger vehicle sales down 23%

SIAM said sales of domestic passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers declined by 23 per cent to 13,28,027 units last month. It was 17,35,909 units in February 2021.

Passenger vehicle sales fell 6 per cent to 2,62,984 units in February 2022. It was 2,81,380 units in the same month last year. Passenger car wholesales stood at 1,33,572 units as compared to 1,55,128 units in February 2021. However, the dispatch of utility vehicles increased to 1,20,122 units from 1,14,350 units in the same period last year.

Van sales declined to 9,290 units last month as against 11,902 units in February 2021.

Similarly, total two-wheeler wholesale sales declined to 10,37,994 units in February from 14,26,865 units in the same month last year. The sales of two-wheeler vehicles saw a decline of 27 percent.

In February, the wholesale sales of scooters stood at 3,44,137 units as against 4,65,097 units in the same period last year. At the same time, the sales of the motorcycle also declined to 6,58,009 units last month as against 9,10,323 units in February 2021.

Three-wheeler sales declined marginally to 27,039 units as compared to 27,665 units in February 2021.

Reduced supply due to semiconductor crisis

Rajesh Menon, Director General, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), said supply-side challenges such as shortage of semiconductors, cost escalation due to new regulations, high commodity prices and high logistics cost, etc., affected overall sales in the auto industry. .

He said the auto industry was closely watching the potential impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This can put the global supply chain under stress.

Decline in auto production

Last month, the total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles declined by 20 per cent to 17,95,514 units as compared to 22,53,241 units in February 2021.
