The controversy erupted after a statement made by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on November 19, in which he Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Was called an ‘old idol’.
Addressing a function at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad on Saturday, the Maharashtra governor said, “Earlier when you were asked who was your icon, the answers would be Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi. You don’t need to look for anyone else in Maharashtra. There are many icons here. Where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the icon of yesteryear, now it is BR Ambedkar and Nitin Gadkari.”
Shiv Sena infuriated by the Governor’s statement
Shiv Sena leaders did not like the governor’s comment on the Maratha warrior. Condemning the Governor’s statement, he said that he is known for insulting great leaders.
Anand Dubey, a spokesperson for the Uddhav Sena, said in a statement, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not only our god, but our source of inspiration. He will always be a role model for all of us.”
Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, belonging to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction, had also demanded Koshyari’s transfer out of the state on Monday.
The MLA said, the Governor should understand that the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj never get old and he cannot be compared with any great person in the world. My request to the BJP leaders at the Center is that a person, who does not know the history of the state and how it works, should be sent elsewhere.”
Descendants of Shivaji Maharaj demand removal of Governor
BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, also objected to it like Shiv Sena leaders. He pulled up Governor Koshyari and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi for this alleged objectionable statement.
Bhosle said, “When I heard the governor’s statement about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, I could not understand what was the basis of such a statement. When all other rulers had accepted the Mughal suzerainty, our king did justice.” fought for and to free people from slavery.”
Along with this, he also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded the removal of Koshyari from the post. In a letter to Modi, Bhosle said the Prime Minister’s visit to the Raigad Fort and the unveiling of the new naval ensign bearing Shivaji Maharaj’s seal proved his “dedication” to the iconic king.
The letter states, “…but it would also be appropriate to remove the Honorable Governor of Maharashtra, as his statements seem to be contrary to your dedication to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
